Diary of a Band: The Lead Singer
Friday, May 09, 2003
Okay, here's a quick recap of the last 4 months. The Mutes broke up for "creative differences". Pal (guitar), Joey B. (drums), and I kept the practice space and are continuing on under the new name Crossbow. It's a lot heavier and riff based rock. We've got about 7 new songs and it's much more fun than it was before. We just found a bass player - this dude named Hogg. We've been looking for a lead singer.
So I put up an ad on Craigslist.com for a lead singer and get a lot of responses. Out of all of them only two seem like potentials. The first guy is a dude named Rick, who on his voicemail refers to himself as "Rickeroo".
Uh huh.
He comes and auditions and really does not fit in. Nice guy, decent voice, but just not right. Could be because he was 5 feet tall, too old looking, and one of the first things out of his mouth was that one of the best things about being a singer is "all the pussy". My only response was, "I too love the pussy."
Next guy who responds is a dude named Brian. He invites us to this rock night he runs at a club in the city called Flow. He tells us there wil be strippers. We're in.
The picture you see is of Brian and me and Hogg (keeping anonymous). He's a really cool guy, once auditioned for Guns 'n' Roses (the non-Axl, everbody else version). We hang out, get wasted and watch strippers. Not a bad introduction. We're gonna try this guy out and see if he has the chops. He has the rock look down, but he's not at all cheesy, like you might expect from his getup. He can pull it off.
I'll let you know how he works out. We're also gonna audition a guy called "Gay Wolverine".
Rock n roll can be fuckin' weird sometimes.

Diary of a Band
Wednesday, May 07, 2003
Does anyone actually enjoy hearing the trials and tribulations of a fledgling NYC rock band? If so, I'm think of starting this column up again, since the new band is starting to gel. If no one gives a shit, I won't waste my time.

Music of the Month - MAY 2003
Monday, May 05, 2003
Whoomp, here it is:
OLD: Eddie lives again! I picked up a copy of the remastered Piece of Mind by Iron Maiden. Holy shit, I forgot how good this album is. So tightly insane! Adrian Smith and Dave Murray combine for some of the most complex dual guitar harmonies around. Take that, Yngwie! The standout track is also one of the most famous images by Derek Riggs. "The Trooper"!
OLD PICK
NEW: The White Stripes! Everywhere you go, there they are. But I'll be damned if Jack White is the most raw guitar slinger around. Live, they blow everyone else away - including The Strokes (go figure)! This one's pretty obvious, but it's also goddamned good. The best cut of the album is hands-down "Girl You Have No Faith In Medicine".
NEW PICK
AWESOME: A lot of people don't know this one, but it's a classic rock barroom staple from the 70's. Along the lines of April Wine and Focus. I remember shootin' pool downtime with a dirty girl in leather pants (you know I like 'em tight). She danced to this song. The image is forever burned on my cock. Who's the Pat Travers Band, you ask? These guys are. And they're fuckin' "Snortin' Whiskey, Drinkin' Cocaine"
AWESOME PICK
