A Brief & Biased History
You can yell at me all you want about your sentimental attachment to Borderline, Holiday or Die Another Day but when it comes down to it Madonna is smoke and mirrors. After capturing the American zeitgeist in the early eighties, she made a career of playing the smart singing whore and provided an all too eager public never ending stream of publicity stunts and invented controversey. It was clear that Madonna recognized that people liked fucking and many entertained the fantasy of fucking her. After collaborating on a parade of books, videos and movies on the subject, people finally stopped caring. Around this time she played herself in the horror film Truth or Dare. The film was shot in black and white because, according to director Alek Keshishian, "It made it easier to hide her zits."
Indifference to her swelled through the 90's until she magically duped her entire fan base into thinking that she somehow transformed herself into a new cutting edge electronic artist. At that time (1998) there wasn't anything particularly new about what she was doing. Apparently Madonna's fans hadn't noticed what Bjork had been up to since 1993 but it?s probably asking too much for Madonna fans to pay attention to anything but Madonna. What Ray of Light provided more than anything else was a reason for her fanbase to think she was cool again. The birth of her child also gave birth to a new creepy vision of Madonna. One who went to strip clubs and stuffed dollar bills down strippers underwear while her kid was hanging out with the babysitter. As younger artists with bigger breasts like Britney Spears and Christina Agabaggy have started stealing her thunder, Madonna continues to frantically cling to her smart-ho roots. Appearing in James Bond Films in none too appealing attire etc. etc. but can it be that we've finally seen the shadow that will overthrow her.

14 Year Olds From Russia with Love
Tatu the teenage Russian lesbian duo. How can someone who built their career around tiptoe-ing on taboos compete with a two headed monster like that? Whether or not you believe they're lesbians, one would have to believe their goal (or more accurately their producer, Ivan Shapovalov's goal) is to stomp up the ladder with little tantilizing acts and scandals in much the same way Madonna did. Some people in the religious and conservative right will have steam pouring out of their ears for sure but let's get real. In the U.S. we're living in a society that is counting down the days until the Olsen Twins are of "legal age" and Britney Spears virginity made ongoing national headlines. Is anyone going to be able to stop these two? Unlikely. While Madonna is following in the vein of Ed Vedder and The Dixies Girls with various anti-American shennanigans, Tatu are inviting 14 year old girls to pose naked for their album cover. Which will get more attention do you think?
Any Movie Caller will know that I don't make a habit of listening to the radio or watching MTV. To be honest I haven't heard any of Tatu's music and I can't say I care one way or another about this group. However if there's one thing I appreciate, it's a pop group with a mission, regardless of how meager that mission may be. The Spice Girls had the abstract "Girl Power!" slogan. Now Tatu seem to have a mission to exploit taboos and or to put it another way "let's freak people."

Lena: We don't know how to explain it, but it was really very big scandal. They asked us not to kiss on the show...and we said "we can't do nothing with this because it depends on mood. If we are feeling like kissing we will do it." Now we have information they cut it because this show was shown already in New York and they cut the kiss, so it was f**k...I don't think they will cut all of the performance. But its really very, very strange. I don't know how to explain my feelings 'cause its really stupid.
JoJo: Does it really make you angry that something like that would happen?
Lena: Frankly speaking, we don't give a s**t, but its only their problem but its really stupid from their side. They can do nothing with us and anyway every person I think who are watching MTV or who knows us
